About the Artist

Laurence Smith Watercolours

Laurence Smith works in watercolour across the coast and countryside of eastern England — especially Norfolk and Essex — where big skies, estuary light and weathered architecture give him endless variation. He is drawn to the same things whether he is on the marsh at low water, on a quay among hulls and rigging, or looking across rooftops and church spires: clarity of light, texture in brick and timber, and the calm or bustle of a place at a particular time of day.

His paintings take in working harbours and fishing boats, seaside towns and beach huts, the granaries and pubs of Wells-next-the-Sea, the staithes at Brancaster, and the seafront at Cromer — including the tractors and working life of the shore. Sandringham and other country houses sit alongside village churches and wide coastal views. Along the Essex coast, Maldon Quay, St Mary's Church and the Thames sailing barges receive the same careful treatment. Away from the tide line, expressive studies of the Norfolk hare — running, leaping and boxing — capture movement and character in a few decisive washes.
